In line with Rosacea Awareness Month in April, ZO Skin Health aims at educating people in South Africa about the symptoms and causes of this inflammatory skin condition and the challenges one faces with rosacea treatment.
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that makes you blush more easily than other people. Other symptoms include permanent redness, hot flushes, spots and thread veins. The redness usually appears on the forehead, nose and cheeks but it can also spread to the back, chest and ears. People affected by rosacea tend to have skin that irritates easily, and which cannot tolerate various skincare products. While the causes of rosacea are not completely understood, it is mostly believed that it is triggered by hormonal fluctuations, hyperactive oil glands and possibly even genetics. Severe rosacea should always be treated by a dermatologist, and, thankfully, there are effective skincare regimes that are available to help control the milder forms of this condition and contain the inflammatory response to its triggers. Leading this approach is ZO® Skin Health, renowned for its pioneering work in combining science with skin health and care.
The ZO® Skin Health approach to rosacea treatment
ZO® Skin Health’s mantra, and ultimate goal for all of us, is sustainable skin health. When it comes to mild symptoms of rosacea, it provides a wide variety of products that help to minimise the inflammatory response to excess sebum production. In addition, these treatments all provide protection for the skin through strengthening of its barrier function. The products form part of the ZO® Medical rosacea protocol and include products for all parts of the skincare regimen. Key within this protocol is Rozatrol, which is a stabilising serum for red, sensitised skin that works to normalise the skin by reducing excess surface oil. It also provides mild exfoliation to help smooth skin texture and even skin tone, as well as antioxidant protection to help minimise inflammation and damage.

Another product is the Exfoliating Polish which provides at-home benefits of microdermabrasion through the use of ultra-fine magnesium crystals which exfoliate dead skin cells and thus facilitate epidermal turnover for a cleaner, smoother and more even-toned complexion. This polish instantly polishes the skin to restore smoother texture, enhance penetration of subsequent ingredients and ensures a healthy glow to the skin. Added to this, is Brightenex, which comes in various strengths of retinol, and targets skin discoloration, breaks up existing pigmentation brightens skin and helps even skin tone. As in the case of most ZO® Skin Health products, the brighteners also help prevent future damage by providing antioxidant protection and supporting skin repair.
Holistic treatment for rosacea
ZO® Skin Health provides a variety of other additional products which also help to minimise the skin’s inflammatory response, including Oil Control Pads and non-irritating sunscreens. Sunscreen is especially important to reduce Rosacea flare ups caused by UV exposure.
